An early evening bike ride on a recent Tuesday evening in September ended tragically for a 62-year-old man. The bike rider was approximately a mile inside the New Jersey state border, when he was hit head-on by a truck. The impact of the accident left the accident victim with severe injuries.

His vehicle then collided with the bike rider. The victim was flung from his bike and struck his head when he landed. He was transported to a medical center in the area, where his condition was listed as critical.

Police on the scene arrested the driver of the truck, as they suspected that he was intoxicated. Toxicology reports are awaitedHe was charged criminally, and $25,000 bail was set. The alleged drunken driver now faces charges relating to driving under the influence, reckless driving, assault by auto and other vehicle violations. He was released after posting the required 10 percent of his bail in cash.

Victims of bike accidents who have suffered severe injuries may elect to file personal injury claims against alleged negligent drivers. In New Jersey, successful personal injury claims may lead to the award of damages should the evidence prove that the negligent actions of a driver was the root cause of the accident. In fatal accidents, a wrongful death claim may be pursued. Damages awarded in a personal injury claim may provide the financial aid needed by the victim to recover from the injuries suffered.
