Truck Driver Admits Distracted Driving In Accident That Injures 1

When a car is rear-ended by a truck, the occupants of the car could suffer potential life-changing injuries. Injuries that result from a whiplash effect caused by the impact are often not immediately evident, but they may present spinal and neck problems later. Smashing into the back of another vehicle is often the result of distracted driving.

The driver of a tractor-trailer was recently cited for not following at a safe distance and careless driving after crashing into the rear of a car that was driven by a 65-year-old New Jersey woman. Police responded to a call about an accident involving a tractor-trailer and two cars on Route 1. The accident happened when the truck driver failed to notice that the traffic ahead had come to a halt. He allegedly hit one car from behind, forcing it into the adjacent lane. The car collided with another car and sent it careening off the road.

Police reported that the truck driver admitted to being distracted while eating a sandwich. The driver of the car that was rear-ended was transported to a hospital, complaining of back and neck pain. The media report made no mention of injuries suffered by the driver of the second car that was pushed off the roadway.

The injuries suffered by the woman are typical of such an accident and may seem insignificant initially. However, soft tissue injuries may flare up at a later stage, impairing an individual’s ability to work and live a normal life. An injured victim of an accident that was caused by the distracted driving of another party may have the right to file a personal injury claim in a New Jersey civil court. In addition to a monetary judgment to cover current medical expenses, the court may award additional compensation for future medical costs if it is deemed appropriate under state laws.
