The students at a New Jersey high school are in shock after three of their fellow students were involved in a serious accident that led to the death of one of the members of the senior class. The 18-year-old female suffered severe injuries after being flung from the front seat of the SUV in which she was riding. She was declared dead as a result of the severe brain injuries she suffered after arriving at a hospital. Her 15-year-old brother and the 17-year-old driver of the SUV were both injured but are expected to make full recoveries.
The accident happened on a recent Wednesday evening just after 8:30 p.m. An investigation into the accident led authorities to believe that the young driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle then traveled sideways for a distance before flipping. It then left the road, rolled several times and came to rest in someone’s yard.
While planned extracurricular activities have been canceled, counseling services have been made available to the students at the school. Teachers will also be vigilant and are ready to help students to deal with the sadness and shock they may be feeling. Many of the victim’s friends have placed flowers at the accident scene.
The young driver’s name has not been released because she is a juvenile; however, she has been criminally charged. Regardless of the outcome of the criminal proceedings, the New Jersey family of the deceased victim who died of the severe injuries she sustained in the accident may elect to file a wrongful death claim against the parents or guardian of the minor who was driving. Successful wrongful death claims may provide families of deceased victims some financial relief from the unexpected costs arising from accidents.
